A new blog: 'Japanese words of anime fans, by anime fans, for anime fans'

So my friend Yuya finally took up my suggestion to open a blog entitled Japanese words of anime fans, by anime fans, for anime fans. You can guess from the title what the blog is about. Go over there for a look and be sure to leave some comments. I will add a link in a sidebar and post my comments there shortly.

More Chinese fan-made products of 'Saint Seiya'

Since I am on the subject of a Chinese fan-made computer game of Saint Seiya, I may as well mention other Chinese fan-made products. Tarot cards seems to be a popular medium:

An introduction to the Chinese fan-made game 'Summery Fancy' based on 'Saint Seiya'

As requested by Euryclee and Ialda, here is my post on Summery Fancy, an otome game or dating sim based on Saint Seiya. I will just let the pictures speak for themselves:

Fan-made anime of 'Saint Seiya' from the PRC

I know Saint Seiya is an oldie, but it has a formidable cult following that persists till this day. Go and have a look at this fan-made anime thereof produced in China to get a feel of the level of sophistication these projects can have.

Production I.G. to become a stock company

... and the new stock company is to be called (provisionally) 'I.G. Port'. I can't make out from the news source how the structure will be like: Will be I. G. Port (a stock company) holding stocks in Production I. G (also a stock company), or will Production I. G. just change its name and become a stock company called I. G. Port or what.

(It's getting late in my timezone and I will read more carefully later.)

The Second Season of 'The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi'

Courtesy of Manganimation, here and here are the NewType scans (08/2007 issue) announcing the Second Coming Season of The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi.

Not much is revealed in those scans. But unconfirmed rumours (as usual) are floating around 2ch:

1)Watch out for the ED of next week's episode Lucky Star, where this news will be officially confirmed (not sure if next week means 08/072007 or 15/07/2007).

2) The director will be Yamamoto Yutaka 山本寛.

3) The second season will appear in the winter of 2008.

Those of you who have also enjoyed Haruhi, rejoice!

I will probably come back to post more news later.

The art direction and symbolisms of 'Gankutsuou'

The thing with Gankutsuou is that you never know when they are hiding subtle jokes behind the extravagant visuals:

1) Mors Certa, Hora Incerta

Gankutsuou0133

Some people do not like the way they adapted the plot of Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo into Gankutsuou. I rather like the way it is changed into a coming-of-age story. If you look carefully at this clock which appears in Luna in Episode 1, the newsflash happen to say 'one's minority'. I could hardly think it is a mere coincidence given the symbolic importance of the clock at the Count's hide-out at Champs Elysees as well as the watch the Count gives  to Albert. The message is clear: The clock is ticking against one's minority.

First impressions of the first episode of 'Shigurui'

Pic1061 Further to my previous post on the plot summary of Shigurui, check out this Chinese webpage for a ton of screen captures of the first episode.

I will reserve my opinion until I will have seen the episode, but some quick comments for now:

  • Consider me captivated by the color theme of red, white and black in the OP.
  • The building up of dramatic tension seems to be a strength of this series.
  • This sure is a samurai show that does not skirt the gruesomeness of violence.

[UPDATE: 03/07/07]

So I just finished watching the first episode. It is indeed as I have expected above.

We also find out a bit more about the plot. The feudal lord obviously has a bee in his bonnet about blood and violence. The thing is, I am not in a good position to summarize the episode properly because I turn my eyes away too often because of the bloodliness.

The anime piracy industry in the PRC: The report from the ground

So a certain regular of my anime blogs and I raided a few Mainland Chinese bookstores together. Let's just go through the exhibits:
